FANGORIA MAGAZINE still reels “the feels”

December 6, 2018 by Jeff T. Smith No Comments
Fangoria Magazine Cover

How the new publication measures up to its legendary predecessor

Billed as “the first in fright since 1979”, Fangoria Magazine was a beloved publication that appealed to generations of genre lovers and gore hounds alike. It ran a darker tone than Starlog Magazine and seemed boundary pushing to the teenage (or child or pre-teen more likely) buyer since it felt like “Adult” magazine material. Eventually running to 10 months/issues per year, the slasher boom of the 80’s put Fangoria on the major map to all-time Horror greats. The directors of today often credit the magazine with inspiring them through its new coverage or retrospectives on horror media content. In 2015, the last of the Fangoria magazines, featuring the goddess herself, Elvira, hit shelves. Then, nothing….subscribers sat frustrated with promises of new or exclusive issues….and the rest sat without. The names commonly associated with the piece began dropping off and moving onto competitor brands.

MY FIRST FINAL GIRL – The importance of Laurie Strode

October 19, 2018 by Jeff T. Smith No Comments
Halloween 1978 Laurie Strode

Thank you, Jamie Lee Curtis.

She isn’t just my first final girl because, let’s face it, she was THE first final girl to hit a mainstream horror audience. With due kudos to final girls such as Marilyn Burns‘ Sally Hardesty in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Olivia Hussey’s Jess in Black Christmas, it was in 1978 that young starlet Jamie Lee Curtis first graced the screens as a 17-year-old babysitter who did not succumb to her attacker and continued to fight until the very end. This babysitter was named Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Halloween.

JASON LIVES and he didn’t go to Hell: A review of the new ‘Friday the 13th’ The Game

June 21, 2017 by Curtis Sturrock No Comments
Friday The 13th The Game

It’s here! The Friday The 13th The Game review that I had all intentions on writing a few days after its release on May 26th. Now, almost four weeks later, I was finally able to pull myself away from my Xbox One and sit down to write this mediocre yet passionate “review”.

[REVIEW] Serial Killer Shop’s T-Shirts Slay!

April 9, 2017 by Brandon Gentry No Comments
Serial Killer Shop Review

If you pay attention to what’s going on in horror through social media, chances are you’ve bumped into Serial Killer Shop, a fashion and lifestyle brand that sells T-shirts, hats, magnets and more. In fact, like 40oz. Of Horror, you might be one of their 27,000 Instagram followers.

I finally got around to adding a couple Serial Killer Shop T-shirts to my collection, and I’m glad I did. I say “collection” because I don’t just have T-shirts for wearing — I do, in fact, collect them. Luckily for me, my job is casual, and I sport a printed tee, primarily band-, alcohol- or horror-related, nearly every day.

I opted for the Freddy Krueger “Don’t Fall Asleep” and Patrick Bateman “Hey Paul” T-shirts. The first thing I noticed is the high-quality print job. The crisp graphics and the vibrant colors definitely meet and exceed my standards as a connoisseur of the pop culture T-shirt. In my experience, fit and comfort are generally something that only comes with the softening of a vintage tee — the kind you’d get from your dad as a hand-me-down. But right off the rack, Serial Killer Shop T-shirts have a great fit and feel.

Bottom line: These tees are 40oz. Of Horror approved. I know what I’m wearing to the next horror convention.

Rue Morgue’s Praise of the 40oz. Of Horror! Podcast

October 18, 2016 by Brandon Gentry 1 Comment
40oz. Of Horror! Podcast

“[40oz. Of Horror] have claimed a stake for themselves as the unabashed party animals in the horror podcast scene.”

-Rue Morgue Magazine

You guys, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of our boys Chad and James. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of this little podcast. I’d really be lying if I said that we all weren’t struck fucking speechless when we saw a positive review of the 40oz. Of Horror! Podcast in the latest issue of Rue Morgue Magazine!

For James… this is his mag, man! This is his Rolling Stone!

We didn’t know the review was happening, but it did. We didn’t start this thing because of us. It’s never been about us. It all started at the horror cons, meeting new friends and talking horror over some beers. We’re humbled and grateful. Thanks for sticking with us. Thanks for drinking up. Check out the review below.

From Rue Morgue:

“More often than not, swilling brews and booze can lead to dumb jokes or obnoxious rants. As such, I was wary about a podcast called 40oz. Of Horror and even more hesitant when the first episode I heard consisted of them discussing the douchebaggery and debauchery of the Indy 500. And yet, I found myself won over by these genre superfans who have claimed a stake for themselves as the unabashed party animals in the horror podcast scene. Their love for horror is as apparent as their appreciation of fine, micro-brewed lager. Friends since childhood, show hosts Chad Butrum and James Dunn have zero pretentious in their approach to horror, and their genuine affection for one another is as obvious as it is infectious. They cover the latest in horror news along with your typical fanboy updates but also veer into their other interests, including racing, wrestling and other sports. It would be easy to slam a couple guys for sucking suds and yacking it up but Chad and James are likable enough that it works, and I must admit, that if I were inclined to pound back a six-pack and listen to a horror podcast, this would be my show of choice… especially since their belches sound so vivid you can practically smell them. Bottoms up!”

What if the ‘Elm Street’ Kids Had Facebook?

October 9, 2016 by Brandon Gentry 14 Comments
What if the Nightmare on Elm Street Kids Had Been on Facebook?

I often think about how things might have been different if we had the internet and social media back in the day. But what if the teenagers in one of the most iconic horror movies of all time had social media?” What if the Nightmare on Elm Street kids had Facebook? What would that be like for Freddy Krueger’s Elm Street children? Here’s a look at the Elm Street Kids’ Facebook timeline — a modernization — taking place in 2016 Springwood, Ohio as their nightmares about the Springwood Slasher unfold.

9 Halloween Costumes You Totally Wore as a Kid in the ’80s and ’90s

October 1, 2016 by Brandon Gentry 1 Comment
9 Halloween Costumes You Wore as a Kid in the 80s and 90s

I wanted to revisit the Halloween costumes our generation wore during the golden era of Halloween in the 1980s and 90s. Our costumes were nothing less than battle armor that protected us as we ventured into the darkness in search of every illuminated porch light in town. They transformed us into 4-foot-tall elite trick-or-treating, candy-eating, smell-my-feeting machines. So here they are:

The 9 Halloween costumes you KNOW you wore as a kid
